What Are Ball Gags Used for?
If you are looking for ways to make a DIY ball gag, you probably already know what they are used for. But if you just happened by, and your interest is piqued, here is the down low on what ball gags and other gags are used for.
Naughty Fun
In many cases, gags are used simply for naughty, erotic fun. For instance, if a couple wants to try some light bondage, they may incorporate a gag of some sort into their play.
In essence, ball gags and other types of gags are used for dominance and submissive role playing, to keep the submissive partner from being able to speak.
Gags and BDSM
Now, in speaking of dominance and submission, BDSM is where you most often see gags used. That is because the person wearing the gag is unable to speak, thus making them submit to their dominant partner.
Plus, there are other types of gags that can be used to keep the mouth open for oral sex or feeding. So, let’s talk about the different types of ball and other gags that are available.
Types of Ball Gags
There are a few different types of ball gags to choose from. First, you can find ball gags with solid, silicone balls in an array of sizes. As a matter of fact, we have compiled a comparison of the best ball gags available.
However, if you happen to be an ole pro at using a gag, or happen to have an unusually large mouth, there are several styles of large ball gags to choose from.
Finally, the preferred type of ball gag, which happens to reduce drooling while increasing comfort, is the breathable ball gag. These are created with slots or holes that make breathing easier, thus keeping the mouth drier.
Other Types of Gags
Aside from the ball gag, other varieties of gags are different shapes and sizes. I mean, not all folks can handle a round object in their mouth for long periods on time.
Additionally, there are different gags for different types of role playing and erotic activities. For instance:
- Pacifier gags for DDLG or other Little role playing.
- Open mouth gags which allow for things like food or penises to pass through.
- Dildo gags which keep the mouth – and throat, depending on the length – full.
- Bit gags sit sideways in the mouth and are much easier to bite down on.
- Inflatable gags, usually shaped like penises, inflate to the wearer’s preferred size.
- Gags with attachments include nipple clamps, bondage items and more.
- Mask or harness gags cover the face in some capacity; some even include animal ears.
- Panel gags are the perfect accessories for keeping a submissive quiet.
Supplies for Homemade Gags

So, here are some supplies you can use to create a DIY ball gag, as well as other types of gags:
- Long scarves
- Rope
- Large size dog collars
- Baby pacifiers
- Duct tape
- Pieces of felt or other scrap fabric
- A drill (or other means of making holes)
- Plastic balls (ping pong, golf practice balls, cheap toys)
- Silicone dog bones
#1 Easy DIY Ball Gag
This homemade ball gag is the easiest to make! The only thing you need to create it is a long, preferably soft, scarf.
I found a really long, incredibly soft fashion scarf at the Dollar Tree for $1.25.
To make this ball gag, all you need to do is find the center of the scarf and tie a knot in it.
Then, tie more knots in the same spot, making the knot larger. Also, you can place knots side-by-side to make the ball gag wider.
Once the knot is the size you want it, open the sides of the scarf up and wrap them around the knots you tied. Then, tie it one more time.
Simply place the knot in your or your partner’s mouth and tie behind the head.
#2 Plastic Ball DIY Ball Gag
Our second DIY ball gag is easy to make and won’t get soggy like a fabric gag will. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Small plastic ball
- Long scarf or piece of rope
- Drill
I got my plastic balls at the Dollar Tree for $1.25; they came in a plastic, toy golf set. You can use something like this or grab ping pong balls or practice golf balls which already have holes in them.
First, drill a hole on each side of the ball. Or, since I don’t own a drill, I put a screw in each side and made the holes bigger by using scissors.
Next, use a pencil, screwdriver or chop stick to push the scarf through the ball.
Finally, place the ball in the wearer’s mouth and secure the scarf behind the head.
Tips for Customizing Your Ball Gag
You can customize your DIY ball gag by drilling more holes in the ball. What this does is makes your ball gag the breathable, less-drool type.
Or, you can make a rope ball gag by changing out the scarf for a thick, soft piece of rope.
Finally, since your ball is plastic, you can have the wearer bite down on the ball, before you drill the holes. That way, the plastic ball is a custom fit and much more comfortable!
#3 Homemade Pacifier Gag
A Pacifier gag is the perfect DIY project that you and your little can make together! And all you need are the following things:
- A baby’s pacifier
- Soft rope or a scarf
This homemade gag is incredibly easy to make because baby pacifiers already have holes in them, by design, to minimize the suction on baby’s face. Therefore, choose the color and type of pacifier you prefer.
I picked up this all silicone pacified at the Dollar Tree.
Next, cut your scarf or piece of rope evenly in half.
Now, thread the scarf through the holes on each side – from the nipple side out – and tie a knot large enough to keep it from slipping through the hole.
To use, place the pacifier in your Little’s mouth and secure it by tying a knot in the scarf, behind their head.
Customize Your Pacifier Gag
The fun part of creating a DIY pacifier gag is that you can customize it to your Little’s liking! First, choose a color and style of pacifier that your Little loves.
Then, choose a scarf with matching colors and a patten that’s pretty, cute or fun. Also, you can purchase some rhinestones and other small embellishments to further customize the pacifier gag.
Finally, if you want a bigger pacifier, take a look in the puppy toys of your nearest pet shop. That’s because they make larger, puppy pacifiers that may be the exact size you need for your homemade pacifier gag.
#4 DIY Bit Gag Dog Collar
Are you into puppy or pet play? If so, you can create a DIY bit gag by using a dog collar.
Here is what you’ll need:
- Size large to extra-large, adjustable dog collar
- Piece of fabric or felt
- Duct tape
First, adjust the dog collar so that it fits around the wearer’s head. Next, be sure and snip off any pieces that are used to keep the layers of cloth together – like this plastic piece.
Now, with the collar lying flat, wrap a piece of felt (or other fabric) around the collar, forming a bit.
Next, cover the fabric with duct tape. What this does is keeps the bit from getting soggy.
Finally, slip the bit into your partner’s mouth and clip the collar behind their head.
Customize Your Dog Collar Gag
You can easily create a custom dog collar bit gag by choosing different types of collars in different colors. Plus, duct tape comes in a wide array of colors and patterns, so your gag can be as wild as you choose.
Finally, use different thicknesses of fabric to wrap around the collar. What this does is makes the bit thicker, further hindering your submissive’s ability to speak.
#5 Homemade Bit Gag Doggy Bone
Another great bit gag, especially if you enjoy animal play, is a DIY gag using a doggy bone. Here’s what you’ll need to make one:
- Bone shaped dog chew toy – silicone is best
- Scarf or rope
- Drill
The first step is to drill holes on each end of the dog bone. Again, since I don’t have a drill, I put a screw through each end, then used scissors to make the holes bigger.
Next, be sure you snip off any pieces of silicone hanging on the bone, around the holes.
Now, using a pencil or chop stick, push the end of the rope or scarf through the hole and tie a knot to secure it. Repeat on the other side.
The next step is to pull the loop of the scarf tightly and cut in the center.
Place the dog bone bit in the wearer’s mouth and secure the scarf behind their head!
Tips to Make Your Bone Gag Better
You can make this homemade gag even better by changing up the dog toy that you use. In other words, choose a different color, style or even material.
For example, use a squeaky toy bone or even a hot dog to create your homemade gag. Not only will it be fun, but it will add a bit more humiliation to BDSM play.
Create, Consent, and Enjoy!
Now that you have learned how to create 5 different homemade gags, be sure you know all of the tips and tricks for using a ball gag. Most importantly, that means to have your partner’s consent before engaging in any sort of BDSM or ball gag play.
Next, you must create a safe sound or action. What this means is, since you can’t use a safe word because of your mouth being obstructed.
Therefore, you need another sound or action that can be used to stop play. Examples of safe sounds can be humming a certain song like “Happy Birthday”.
Furthermore, you can instead, use an action like knocking “Shave and a Hair Cut”, snapping your fingers 3 times or even holding your hands a certain way.
Finally, once all of the ground rules are laid out, it’s time for some exciting BDSM or erotic, role playing fun!
