Sex Toys for Penetration: the Basics

Whether you’re shopping for yourself or for something to use with a partner, sex toys can be a great addition to your sexual repertoire.  Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. First, go to a sex shop and have a little feel of all the different types of toys and the materials used.
2. Remember to be sure to clean your toys in between uses regardless if you used it by yourself or with a partner.  
3. Be sure to know what material your toy is made from so you use the right cleaning agents on it, ensuring it gets cleaned properly.

If you are going to choose toys for penetration you need to remember a few things:

• Remember to be kind to the vagina or anus when using foreign objects for penetration.  
• If you use something completely rigid, like glass or metal, you can potentially harm the inside of the cavity you are penetrating, so enter with caution.  Although easier to clean (as they can go in the dishwasher) they don’t offer as much flexibility as other malleable materials.
• As with all sex toys, for greatest enjoyment, use plenty of lubricant. Make sure that you are well-informed about what kind of lubricant you need for that particular toy, as some lubricants can break down the material of sex toys.

Dildos and vibrators:

Dildos come in all shapes and sizes. Some are shaped like penises, others look nothing like penises.  Some have additions to them to provide clitoral stimulation at the same time. Some dildos vibrate and gyrate.  Some are battery operated and some can be controlled via an app on your phone. Most are used during solo play, but some can be used at the same time as penetration with a partner.  There are SO many types, that a little expedition into the world of sex toys is worth the trip!

Toys for anal pleasure/penetration:

Anal beads are very popular.  The best way to describe anal beads is by having you think of a pearl necklace, only the “pearls” are about the size of grapes and strung farther apart.

In using anal beads, make sure both the beads and the receiving anus are well-lubricated. Insert the beads slowly, one at a time, enjoying the way they gently open the anus, and the way the sphincter closes around each bead. Withdraw them the same way. You can insert and withdraw just one or two beads if you wish, or the entire strand.

Butt-plugs are usually non-vibrating cylindrical toys designed for insertion into the anus and rectum, often used to prepare the anus for penetration.

Anal dildos tend to be slimmer for greater comfort and tend to sport a flared or handled base to ensure that it doesn’t get lost while journeying into the canal. Again, be sure to use plenty of lubricant on both the dildo and the receiving anus.

Remember that after you use any sex toy and insert it into the anus, DO NOT introduce it into any other erotic opening without thoroughly washing it with soap and water, or a cleaner appropriate for the material that it is made out of. You can also put a condom on your dildo, and make sure to change it if you are going to enter another opening.
