Vibrator addiction—Myth or Reality?

Vibrator addiction—Myth or Reality?

First of all, a little history about the vibrator/dildo. People have been using various objects for sexual penetration for centuries.  Evidence of dildos have been found by archeologists for years, both in ancient Egyptian and ancient Greek digs.  The world’s oldest known dildo is a penis shaped siltstone, 20-centimeter in length, dated back to the upper Palaeolithic period (that’s like 30,000 years ago!).  Drawings on a vase with a woman using a dildo depicted on it was found and dated to the fifth century B.C.

It is said that women used dildos to satisfy themselves when their male partners were gone on hunting expeditions.  The first dildos were made of stone, tar, wood or some other material that could be molded into the shape of a penis and was firm enough for penetration.  With the invention of modern materials you can make dildos of any shape, size, color and texture today. And of course with technological advances, we can even make them vibrate.

Let’s have a look at the difference between a dildo and a vibrator, 2 words often used interchangeably.

Dildos come in both non-vibrating and vibrating models.  They are used for sexual stimulation of the vagina and/or anus.  They come in realistic-looking penis shapes or more abstract plastic cylindrical shapes, where one of the ends is tapered.  Some dildos even have curved ends for stimulation of the g-spot.

Two-headed dildos, otherwise known as double-ended dildos, are long and usually flexible with both ends designed for penetration. This allows for mutual penetration between two people.

By the way, double headed dildos are used vaginally by two women, anally by women and/or men, or in two orifices by the same person. They actually tend to be much larger than even the largest penis, so they seem to inspire fantasy as well as pleasure.

Vibrators are intended to stimulate nerves in the body and come in many shapes and sizes including the shape of a penis.  Vibrating dildos allow for internal and external use. They usually measure five to seven inches in length and one to two inches in width, mimicking the size of an actual penis. Vibrators designed for anal stimulation are typically smaller.

Penetratable sex toys are often made from latex, jelly, silicone, cyberskin, metal, rubber, glass, acrylic, or lucite.

People are often concerned that they could get addicted to their sex toy. That if a woman loves her vibrator so much she won’t need or want a live person, and she won’t want to leave the house.  Of course, this is a bit of a misconception.

No sex toy can replace the intimacy of a lover. In fact experiencing an orgasm, whichever way, opens the door for you to have orgasms in other ways, (like intercourse). An orgasm produced by a vibrator can be quicker and more intense because it offers direct stimulation of the clitoris and the pressure is more powerful.

Rather than using the term “addiction”, I would say it’s more like you get used to sex in only one way.  It’s the same thing if all you engaged in was oral sex–yes it’s great but it doesn’t mean that you don’t want variety.

If this is a problem for you though, make a gradual shift to other forms of sexual stimulation.  You can always go cold turkey and become more creative at finding ways to achieve orgasm.
